Introduction to Data Structures

Computer Science me Data Structure ek aisa structured tarika hota hai jisse hum computer memory ke andar data ko organize, store, manage aur manipulate karte hain taaki efficiently operations perform kiye ja sakein. Jab hum koi software, app ya algorithm develop karte hain, toh humara primary goal hota hai ki kam se kam memory space lage aur processing speed sabse tez ho.

Agar data randomly memory me bikhra rahega, toh kisi particular element ko dhundhna ya modify karna behad slow aur costly ho jayega. Data structures hume logical relationship provide karte hain raw data elements ke beech me.

Data Structure Definition and Key Components

Formally, ek Data Structure ko define kiya jata hai as: Mathematical ya logical model jo data elements ke organization, unke aapas ke relationships, aur un par perform hone wale legal operations ko define kare.

  • Data: Raw facts aur figures jinka koi specific context nahi hota (jaise numbers 101, 45 ya character ‘A’).
  • Data Item: Single unit of value (jaise Roll Number, Student Name).
  • Data Entity: Ek aisi entity jiske paas attributes ya properties hoti hain (jaise Employee entity jisme EmpID, Salary, Department hote hain).
  • Abstract Data Type (ADT): ADT ek aisa mathematical model hota hai jo yeh specify karta hai ki data ke upar kya operations honge, na ki yeh ki unhe kaise implement kiya jayega (e.g., Stack ADT define karta hai push aur pop operations bina yeh bataye ki array use ho raha hai ya linked list).

Classification of Data Structures

Engineering examinations me Data Structures ka classification sabse fundamental aur frequently asked question hota hai. Inhe broadly do categories me divide kiya jata hai:

        +----------------------+----------------------+
        | |
  Primitive DS Non-Primitive DS
  (int, char, float, pointer) |
                                +---------------------+---------------------+
                                | |
Linear Data Structures Non-Linear Data Structures
                                | |
        +-------------+---------+---------+ +---------------+---------------+
        | | | | | | |
Arrays Linked Stack Queue Trees Graphs Tables /
                    Lists Hash Maps

1. Primitive Data Structures

Yeh basic data types hote hain jo machine architecture aur programming languages dwara directly support aur manipulate kiye jaate hain. Inke operational rules CPU ke hardware instructions se tightly bound hote hain.

  • Integer: Whole numbers store karne ke liye (e.g., 10, -50).
  • Float / Double: Fractional aur decimal numbers ke liye (e.g., 3.1415, -0.005).
  • Character: Single alphanumeric characters ke liye (e.g., ‘A’, ‘$’).
  • Pointer: Memory addresses ko store karne ke liye use hota hai.

2. Non-Primitive Data Structures

Yeh complex data structures hote hain jo primitive data types ko combine karke banaye jaate hain. Inka primary purpose multiple related values ko systematically manage karna hota hai. Inhe do main groups me baanta jata hai:

A. Linear Data Structures

Linear data structures me data elements ek sequential order me arranged hote hain. Har element ka ek unique predecessor (previous element) aur ek unique successor (next element) hota hai, except first aur last elements.

  • Arrays: Homogeneous (same type ke) data elements ka fixed-size contiguous memory collection.
  • Linked Lists: Dynamic data structure jisme nodes pointers ke zariye sequentially connected hote hain.
  • Stacks: LIFO (Last-In-First-Out) principle par kaam karne wala structure jisme insertion aur deletion sirf ek end (TOP) se hota hai.
  • Queues: FIFO (First-In-First-Out) principle par kaam karne wala structure jisme insertion REAR se aur deletion FRONT se hota hai.
B. Non-Linear Data Structures

Non-linear data structures me elements kisi single sequence me arrange nahi hote. Yahan elements hierarchical ya interconnected multi-level relationships exhibit karte hain. Kisi single traversal me saare elements sequentially access nahi kiye ja sakte.

  • Trees: Hierarchical structure jisme parent-child relationships hoti hain. Sabse top node ko Root kehte hain.
  • Graphs: Vertices (nodes) aur Edges (connections) ka collection jo complex network networks ko model karta hai.
  • Hash Tables: Key-value mapping structure jo direct addressing aur fast search provide karta hai.

Linear vs Non-Linear Data Structures: Key Differences

Parameter Linear Data Structure Non-Linear Data Structure
Arrangement Sequential / Linear single-level order Hierarchical ya Network multi-level order
Traversal Single run me complete traverse ho sakta hai Single pass traversal possible nahi hota (e.g. DFS, BFS)
Memory Utilization Aksar inefficient (Arrays me static size limitation) Highly flexible aur dynamic memory utilization
Complexity Implement karna comparatively aasan hota hai Complex operational logic aur pointer relationships
Examples Array, Linked List, Stack, Queue Tree, Binary Search Tree, Graph, Trie

Standard Operations Performed on Data Structures

Kisi bhi data structure par standard operations execute kiye jaate hain:

  1. Traversal: Har ek data element ko exactly ek baar systematically access aur process karna.
  2. Insertion: Specified location par naya data element add karna.
  3. Deletion: Existing data element ko structure se safely remove karna.
  4. Searching: Diye gaye key element ki location ya existence verify karna.
  5. Sorting: Data elements ko kisi specific logical order (Ascending ya Descending) me arrange karna.
  6. Merging: Do alag-alag sorted structures ko combine karke single consolidated structure banana.

Agli post me hum discuss karenge Asymptotic Notations (Big-O, Omega, and Theta) jo algorithm performance ko mathematically measure karne ke liye use kiye jaate hain.
