Network Layer Protocols: ICMP, ARP, RARP, DHCP, and NAT
Overview: Supporting Protocols of Network Layer
Internet Protocol (IP) akele internet nahi chala sakta. IP ko address resolve karne, errors report karne, IP addresses distribute karne aur address conservation ke liye specialized supporting protocols ki zaroorat hoti hai.
Yeh 5 core protocols internet ke silent heroes hain: ARP, RARP, ICMP, DHCP, aur NAT.
1. ARP (Address Resolution Protocol)
Kaam: IP Address ko Physical MAC Address mein convert karna.
Jab aapke computer ko kisi doosre computer ko local network par frame bhejna hota hai, toh use destination ka IP address pata hota hai lekin NIC ka physical MAC address nahi pata hota.
Working:
- ARP Request: Sender local network par broadcast (
FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF) bhejta hai: “Kiske paas IP 192.168.1.5 hai? Mujhe apna MAC address bhejo!” - Sabhi devices is request ko receive karte hain, lekin sirf wahi device reply karta hai jiska wo IP hota hai.
- ARP Reply: Wo device apna MAC address unicast karke sender ko bhej deta hai.
- Sender is mapping ko apne local ARP Cache table mein store kar leta hai taaki baar-baar broadcast na karna pade.
- ARP Request: Sender local network par broadcast (
2. RARP (Reverse Address Resolution Protocol)
Kaam: Physical MAC Address se IP Address pata karna (ARP ka theek ulta).
Yeh puraane diskless workstations (bina hard drive wale computers) ke liye use hota tha. Boot hote waqt computer ke ROM mein sirf apna MAC address hota tha, IP nahi. Computer RARP request bhej kar central server se apna IP address mangwata tha.
(Modern networks mein RARP obsolete ho chuka hai aur iski jagah DHCP ne le li hai).
3. ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol)
Kaam: Error Reporting aur Network Diagnostics.
IP protocol unreliable hota hai aur agar koi packet drop ho jaye toh IP koi error message nahi bhejta. ICMP IP ke behalf par routers aur hosts ko error feedback deta hai.
Common ICMP Messages:
- Destination Unreachable: Router destination host ya port tak nahi pahunch pa raha.
- Time Exceeded: Packet ka TTL (Time to Live) counter
0ho gaya aur packet drop kar diya gaya. - Echo Request / Echo Reply: Network connectivity check karne ke liye use hota hai. Mashhoor
pingcommand ICMP Echo Request aur Reply use karti hai! traceroutecommand ICMP Time Exceeded messages ke zariye source se destination tak ke saare intermediate routers discover karti hai.
4. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
Kaam: Automatic IP Address Configuration.
Network se connect hone wale har device (laptop, mobile phone) ko automatically IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, aur DNS Server address assign karta hai.
DORA Process (Exam Favorite!):
Client DHCP Server | | |------ 1. DHCP Discover (Broadcast) ------->| (Client: "Is there any DHCP server?") | | |<----- 2. DHCP Offer (Unicast/Bcast) -------| (Server: "I can give you IP 192.168.1.10") | | |------ 3. DHCP Request (Broadcast) -------->| (Client: "I want that IP 192.168.1.10!") | | |<----- 4. DHCP Ack (Unicast/Bcast) ---------| (Server: "IP is leased to you for 24 hrs!") | |
5. NAT (Network Address Translation)
Kaam: Private IP addresses ko ek Single Public IP address mein translate karna.
IPv4 addresses ki shortage se nipatne ke liye NAT banaya gaya. Aapke ghar ke Wi-Fi router se 10 devices connected hain, un sabhi ko private IPs (jaise
192.168.1.x) milti hain. Lekin ISP aapke router ko sirf 1 Public IP deta hai.Jab aap internet par kuch search karte hain, toh NAT router internal private IP aur port ko apne public IP aur unique port number se replace kar deta hai (PAT - Port Address Translation). Jab reply aata hai, toh translation table dekh kar wapas aapke device ko forward kar deta hai.
Summary Comparison Table
| Protocol | Full Form | Primary Function |
|---|---|---|
| ARP | Address Resolution Protocol | IP Address → MAC Address conversion (Local broadcast). |
| RARP | Reverse Address Resolution Protocol | MAC Address → IP Address conversion (for diskless hosts, replaced by DHCP). |
| ICMP | Internet Control Message Protocol | Error notification and network diagnostic tool (Powers ping and traceroute). |
| DHCP | Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol | Dynamic automatic IP allocation to connecting clients via DORA process. |
| NAT | Network Address Translation | Maps multiple private internal IPs to a single public IP to conserve address space. |
